Missing a cat? Make art July 27, 2009

Cardon Copy - 1

Have you ever seen a poorly made illegible poster advertising an apartment to rent or a missing cat and thought, “I could have made a much better one.” Cardon Webb, a New York designer and the man behind website Cardon Copy had obviously had this happen to him one time too many, so decided to actually do something about it.

From the website:

CARDON COPY, TAKES THE VERNACULAR OF SELF-

DISTRIBUTED FLIERS AND TEAR-OFFS WE HAVE ALL SEEN

IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. IT INVOLVES HIJACKING

THESE UNCONSIDERED FLIERS AND REDESIGNING THEM,

OVER POWERING THEIR MESSAGE WITH A NEW VISUAL

LANGUAGE. I THEN REPLACE THE ORIGINAL WITH THE

REDESIGN IN ITS AUTHENTIC ENVIRONMENT.

The experiment has produced interesting results, and most importantly of all, posters that are infinitely lovelier than their original counterparts.

Check out more of my favourites below.

Tru Blood

The marketing team for True Blood, HBO’s TV show and latest hot shit entry into the world of vampire media, have come up with some truly unique marketing ideas for its second season, from selling t-shirts of fictional organisations from the show like Fellowship of the Sun to Fangtasia pint glasses, but the latest product takes it to the next level.

Tru Blood, (notice no ‘e’ in this context), featured on the programme as a synthetic blood alternative for vampires, is going on sale to the general public. Yes, you will literally be able to buy bottles of blood. Orange.

Okay, so maybe it’s not exactly what they’re drinking in the programme but it’s a nifty idea and I’m totally jealous that the HBO store won’t deliver any of it to Ireland.

They’ve even made some hilarious ads for it, one of which you can see below.

"My Mother's Red Hat"

I like Alanis Morissette. But a lot of people don’t. And that’s sort of understandable. She does herself no favours by singing with a Canadian accent (yeah I know she can’t help it but…no I actually think she could help it). She sang a song about irony that was ironic in the fact that it wasn’t ironic at all. I could go on. But I won’t. Because I like her.

I also like Alicia Silverstone. And even though both of their careers more or less died with the 90s, they’ve teamed up for a fake (unfortunately) trailer for a fake movie, “My Mother’s Red Hat”. It’s brilliant. Really. I feel somewhat sad for actually wanting them to make this movie though. The cult classic that never was, courtesy of FunnyorDie.com.

Emma Watson having the lolz

Everyone’s talking about Harry Potter at the moment, considering the new film is out today. So it was really quite appropriate timing to stumble upon University of Michigan’s “A Very Potter Musical”.

Yes, the title of this post is an actual lyric from the opening number “Goin’ Back”. And Lord Voldemort has a tap number in which he uses the Imperius curse to make Harry dance along with him. What more could you ask for?

The opening number is below, and the other 22 parts (yes, the whole thing is up) are on YouTube. I can’t honestly say I’ve watched all 22 parts yet but the first song alone is absolutely lolworthy.

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have filmed a parody of “Sid and Nancy” for Cinemash by retracing a scene from their forthcoming indie rom com “(500) Days of Summer“. Zooey takes on the role of Sid (with a dodgy but hilarious English accent) while Joseph steals the show with his priceless take on needy Nancy. Brilliant.

Paramore

Paramore, love them or hate them, have dropped their new single “Ignorance”. It’s a bit of a darker “Misery Business”, and quite similar to some of the other stuff on their previous album “Riot!” (not necessarily a bad thing). All in all, it’s definitely a strong lead single for their forthcoming album “Brand New Eyes”. Have a listen at the bottom of this post.

Speaking to Rolling Stone in December about why “Ignorance” is a fitting title for the album’s first single, lead singer Hayley Williams said…

I have a lot to say this time around, and there’s a lot of things I thought I knew that I was absolutely wrong about.

The group also recently unveiled a track listing and cover art for the album (below) which is due out on September 29th.

01 Careful
02 Ignorance
03 Playing God
04 Brick by Boring Brick
05 Turn It Off
06 The Only Exception
07 Feeling Sorry
08 Looking Up
09 Where the Lines Overlap
10 Misguided Ghosts
11 All I Wanted

Samuel L. Jackson in a stinger from "Iron Man"

Having worked in a cinema for a year and a half, I always cursed the people who would sit there in the theatre for the entire closing credits. Either they were waiting to see if there would be some interesting little bonus scene at the end, or they were just doing it to annoy me as I gave them the death stare for making me wait for them to leave.

Whatever the reason, even sometimes I have been known to linger during the credits of a film, either to hear a good song or to wait for an extra scene (like the one pictured above, where Samuel L. Jackson makes a pivotal cameo as Nick Fury after the credits of “Iron Man”). I always thought, “wouldn’t it be great if someone could actually tell me whether it’s worth my while staying until after the credits?” And lo and behold, there is a website for that.

This is where MovieStinger.com comes in (‘stingers’ being the name of those post-credits scenes. Bet ya didn’t know that?). The site aims to be a comprehensive guide for those occasions when you should stand your grand and annoy the crap out of the ushers.

This week, for example, don’t waste your time hanging around after “Public Enemies”. Good to know.

See Videoeta for list of their top 10 all-time movie stingers.

“Bon Iver” frontman Justin Vernon is joining forces with fellow Wisconsonites “Collections of Colonies of Bees” under the title “Volcano Choir” for an album that will be released in September entitled Unmap.

While there’s no actual tracks to sample by “Volcano Choir” at the moment, the tracklist (below) and cover (top of post – doesn’t it kind of look like one of the creatures from “The Village”?) has been released. It’s not quite the new “Bon Iver” album I was hoping for, but that’s apparently in the works too.

01 Husks and Shells
02 Seeplymouth
03 Island, IS
04 Dote
05 And Gather
06 Mbira in the Morass
07 Cool Knowledge
08 Still
09 Youlogy

Interestingly, the album may have quite a different sound to what we’re used to from Vernon. He says, “I sing on it, but there aren’t a lot of lyrics– it’s definitely more on the experimental side of things.”

In place of a bit of Volcano Choir music which unfortunately is not available at the mo, I give you Bon Iver’s lovely live performance of Skinny Love from Glastonbury 2009.

Volcano Choir’s debut LP, Unmap, is out September 22 (Sept. 21 in the UK)

Empire Records

“Empire Records”, a cult classic from way back in 1995 still ranks among my favourite films of all time. Perhaps it’s just because I watch longingly at this group of people who ‘work’ in a record shop but realistically just hang around the place all day getting caught up in ridiculous situations and/or try to slit their wrists with a Lady Bic razor (maybe the last bit wasn’t the source of my jealousy…)

Being a film set in a record shop it’s almost inevitable that the film’s soundtrack has at least a few memorable moments, with some that didn’t even make it on to the official soundtrack release.

First and foremost is a nice little soft rock track from 90s Irish sensations The Cranberries, “How”. Makes a nice break from hearing “Dreams”, “Linger” and “Zombie” all the time. Probably my favourite song from the film, and I’m not even that big a Cranberries fan. It’s much better than The Cranberries song which did actually make it onto the soundtrack, “Liar”. Ah well.

The Cranberries – How

Criminally, “Plowed” by Sponge is another track that was left off the film’s official soundtrack despite being one of the most memorable tracks in it. Sponge, often written off as Nirvana imitators, did actually have a few minor hits during the 90s and this was one of them. Overshadowed by Nirvana and left off the soundtrack. They deserve their moment. So here it is.

Sponge – Plowed

Then there was a song called “Sugar High”, fairly standard light rock fare by Coyote Shivers featuring Renée Zellwegger, who looks like she’s having a minor epileptic fit as she sings it. Nevertheless, it was sung at the end of the film on the roof of the store. It has to be good right? It’s definitely passable. Probably not how she got her role in “Chicago”.

And what a better way to round off with Rex Manning’s “Say No More Mon Amour”. There are no words.
